The figure is modelled as an elaborate brocage composition and is attributed to John Dalton. Standing an impressive 23.5 cm high, the piece has substantial scale for an early English pottery figure and displays the richly sculptural character associated with Staffordshire production of the period. St Peter is represented alongside the cockerel, an important element of his traditional Christian iconography. The elaborate modelling and decorative treatment create a particularly appealing example for collectors of early English pottery and religious decorative art. The underside of the base bears numbering, suggesting that the piece may once have formed part of a catalogued collection. The figure remains in good display condition, with some possible restoration to the brocage and small losses to one or two brocage tips.
