The porcelain body is richly decorated in the classical Arita brocade-panel style, combining deep cobalt blue with vibrant iron-red enamels and profuse gilt detailing. The elaborate decoration incorporates traditional Japanese motifs arranged within richly ornamented panels, creating the dense and luxurious appearance associated with high-quality Meiji-period export porcelain. The domed cover is surmounted by a sculptural shi-shi lion finial finished in an ivory tone with gilt detailing, providing an imposing conclusion to the vase's baluster form. Of particular interest is the elaborate Baroque-style bronze and gilt ormolu base. This European mounting was probably added after the vase was exported from Japan and is believed by the seller to be French. The contrasting gilt bronze dramatically enhances the richly coloured Japanese porcelain. Standing 45 cm high, the vase has considerable decorative presence and represents the flourishing market for Japanese decorative arts among European collectors during the second half of the 19th century. The piece is described as remaining in exceptionally fine condition.
