The recumbent lion is depicted with one front paw resting upon a sphere, an enduring feature of the Medici Lion composition. Its carefully modelled mane, powerful body and composed expression give the sculpture a commanding yet dignified presence. The design derives from the famous Medici Lions associated with the Villa Medici in Rome and later the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. The classical composition became widely reproduced in European sculpture and architectural ornament, particularly for the decoration of grand houses, gardens and entrances. The sphere beneath the lion's paw traditionally contributes to the sculpture's imagery of strength, command and authority, while the restrained pose distinguishes the composition from more aggressively rendered heraldic lions. Dating to circa 1920, this substantial example is constructed from composition stone and has developed an attractive aged appearance particularly suited to an established garden or architectural setting. A highly decorative statement piece, ideal for positioning beside an entrance, along a garden terrace, upon a substantial pedestal or within a classically inspired landscape.
