Substantially constructed from cast iron, the scales retain their traditional mechanical weighing arrangement, with graduated weights positioned towards the upper section and brass sliding adjustments incorporated into the mechanism. The lower section features a distinctive guarded metal sack basket designed to securely accommodate bulky goods during weighing. This robust construction reflects the demanding commercial and industrial environments for which scales of this type were originally produced. Particularly appealing is the surviving original green-painted finish, now displaying an attractive aged surface and industrial patina. The nameplate retains the hand-painted manufacturer's inscription, “Sumerling & Co Ltd, Old Street, EC1,” providing an important connection with the firm's London origins. Sack scales of this substantial type were traditionally employed in commercial, agricultural and industrial environments for weighing heavy quantities of produce and merchandise, including sacks of grain, potatoes and other bulk goods. Their cage-like platforms helped contain large sacks securely while measurements were taken. Sumerling & Co operated from Old Street, London, supplying commercial and industrial equipment during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The scales remain in very good antique condition and are described as being in working order. Their original painted finish, substantial proportions and surviving maker's identification make them an especially decorative example of historic British industrial equipment. An impressive statement piece suitable for an industrial interior, commercial display, restaurant, shop or collection of antique weighing equipment.
