Measuring 21.5 cm in diameter, the bowl is particularly distinguished by the exceptional quality and precision of its decoration. Rich underglaze cobalt blue is combined with beautifully coloured overglaze enamels to create an elaborate yet remarkably balanced composition. The interior is arranged around four quatrefoil panels, each depicting mythical shi-shi lions within garden settings. These are complemented by three further panels containing stylised Buddhist lotus motifs. The surrounding decoration displays the almost abstract quality characteristic of particularly accomplished Japanese ornamental design, with the individual elements carefully integrated into the overall composition. The exterior continues the decorative vocabulary of the interior and is equally carefully finished. Around the base are four Fuki-Chosun marks, traditionally associated with wishes for good fortune and longevity. The foot is further defined by a double border, a characteristic detail of the period. The unusual form, sophisticated arrangement of the decoration and particularly fine execution make this an impressive example of mid-19th-century Japanese Arita porcelain. Comparable examples of early Japanese Arita porcelain can be found within the Shibata Collection in Japan, one of the important collections devoted to the development of Arita porcelain. A remarkable collector's piece combining exceptional craftsmanship, an unusual form and substantial proportions. The bowl is accompanied by the antique hardwood display stand shown.
