The generous octagonal top is arranged above six pull-out drawers, providing extensive storage while maintaining the balanced architectural appearance of the table. The richly figured English oak has developed an attractive colour and patina through more than two centuries of age and use. The table is raised on elegantly hipped, downswept legs terminating in the original brass castors, allowing this substantial piece to be moved with relative ease. The combination of the octagonal top, fitted drawers and sweeping base creates a particularly handsome example of Regency-period library furniture. Drum tables became fashionable in Britain during the late Georgian and Regency periods, particularly for libraries and studies, where their multiple drawers provided convenient storage for correspondence, documents and writing materials. The table is presented in excellent antique condition with an attractive aged surface and appropriate signs of historic use consistent with its period.
