The naturalistically formed vessel is intricately carved with tree branches, flowers and leaves, using the organic qualities of the bamboo to create a richly sculptural composition. Particularly attractive is the surviving original surface, displaying deep colour and patination developed naturally over several centuries. An intimate and highly decorative example of Chinese scholar's carving from the Qing period, described by the seller as remaining in excellent condition with its original colour and patina.
