The substantial rectangular top is surrounded by a simple hand-carved frieze, providing subtle ornamentation while allowing the attractive colour, grain and naturally aged surface of the fruitwood to remain the principal feature. The table is raised on beautifully proportioned fluted and hand-turned legs, giving the substantial top an elegant architectural foundation. The combination of the carved frieze and finely worked legs creates a balanced design characteristic of quality late Victorian furniture. Centre tables traditionally occupied prominent positions within drawing rooms, entrance halls and reception spaces, providing both a decorative focal point and a practical surface for books, objects and entertaining. with its generous 160 cm width, this example offers considerable versatility and could equally serve as a substantial console, display or occasional table. The table remains in original antique condition and retains a particularly attractive patina developed through age and historic use. Presented in good antique condition with appropriate surface wear and marks consistent with its period.
