Harry "Henry" Chase (VT/NY/Active France & Holland 1853-1889). A very good Impressionist work by a well-known and sought after American painter. Chase spent a crucial part of his life in Europe and studied under Hendrik Willem Mesdag and became a strong American proponent of The Hague School of Dutch Impressionism. This work appears to accurately reflect that Impressionist influence. It is a very strong, and early, American Impressionist work.
The work is oil/beveled panel and is signed. It is presented in a good, American modernist "weathered" giltwood wormy chestnut frame by A. W. Kalischer. Kalischer had a reputation for producing fine frames and would often pair them with highly respected works by prominent artists. The company was known to have been active from the late 19th century through the early part of the 20th century. The frame is a fine frame, and may, or may not, be contemporaneous with the work. The frame is a work of art in itself.
