Constructed from beautifully faded mahogany, the desk has developed an attractive mellow surface and warm colour. The generous five-foot writing surface is inset with dark green leather, finished with an ornate gilt-tooled border. The desk provides excellent storage with nine drawers arranged across the two pedestals and central section. The drawers have mahogany linings and are currently fitted with old brass handles, which are later replacements; the desk would originally have been fitted with knobs. No key is present. Brass castors allow the substantial desk to be moved more easily, while the traditional double-pedestal construction provides a generously proportioned kneehole. The desk separates into three sections for transportation, comprising the top and two pedestal bases. A handsome and practical example of Victorian office furniture by Howard & Sons, combining substantial proportions, quality mahogany construction and a traditional leather writing surface.
