The piece is stamped “edwards & roberts” and retains the elegant proportions of the original georgian chest. The later conversion transformed the upper section into an exceptionally well-appointed gentleman’s dressing and writing compartment. The top drawer opens to reveal a fitted interior incorporating numerous small compartments, lidded sections and cubby holes, together with a fitted mirror. A green baize writing surface provides an additional practical feature, complete with a pen holder positioned to one side. Below are three further drawers, giving four drawers in total. The chest is fitted with ornate old brass handles depicting turtle doves. These handles are later replacements and are not original to the georgian chest. Further period details include the old planked back and traditional bracket feet. The chest is constructed as a single piece and is offered without a key. An unusual and highly functional example combining late 18th-century georgian cabinetmaking with a documented later conversion by edwards & roberts.
