The chest incorporates eight drawers arranged as four graduated drawers to either side, creating an unusual and beautifully balanced façade while providing generous practical storage. The drawers are fitted with replacement brass handles that complement the rich tones of the mahogany. Particularly striking is the substantial carved base, raised upon elegant cabriole legs terminating in boldly carved ball-and-claw feet. This sculptural detailing gives the chest considerable presence and is characteristic of the more decorative tradition of Irish furniture. The mahogany displays pronounced natural figuring, deep colour and an attractive aged patina throughout. Its considerable weight and substantial construction further reflect the quality of the cabinetmaking. Presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use. The brass handles are later replacements. For ease of transportation and installation, the carved base can be removed from the main chest. An imposing and unusual example of 19th-century Irish cabinet furniture, combining extensive storage with richly carved detailing and considerable decorative presence.
