A large-scale, primitive style wooden ratchet candle stand, handmade in the 1990s. The distinctive zig-zag notches running down the vertical spine allow the height of the top platform to be raised or lowered and secured using the catch pin to lock in the height. The wood is finished in a rustic deep red with a mottled, aged look. It is signed "BASQ" on the side of the footed base.
Fully lowered, the piece measures 26" high; fully raised, it is 40" high. Making this suitable for tabletop or floor placement.
The style of this is unique, as it feels both 1990s postmodern and highly sculptural, as well as rustic, folk art, and country.
Candle holders like this were popularized in early American, Shaker, and European folk design. These functional pieces typically held wax candles or grease lamps. By adjusting the height, users could control the spread of light in dimly lit rooms.
Please note, with candles, this can be top-heavy. I recommend placing museum wax on the feet to stabilize it and placing it in a low-traffic area.
