A distinctive set of six late 19th-century French Louis XVI style dining chairs by Maison Jansen, dating to the second half of the 19th century. Sourced in Paris, France, the chairs feature carved wooden frames with a naturally aged cream-painted finish and a beautiful patina developed over time. The chairs are distinguished by their rectangular upholstered backrests with gently arched crests, molded frames, and decorative metal mounts at the upper corners and seat-frame joints. The seats feature subtly curved front rails supported by finely fluted, tapered legs. The front legs terminate in brass casters, while the rear legs retain their rounded wooden feet. Brass nailhead trim outlines the upholstered backs and seats, complementing the decorative hardware throughout. Bearing the Maison Jansen stamp, the chairs were previously reupholstered in France in muted peach/ salmon-colored python-embossed vinyl. The textured upholstery creates an unexpected contrast with the classical Louis XVI silhouettes and naturally aged painted frames. The chairs have been structurally revised and are solid and stable. The painted surfaces retain their naturally aged patina, with characteristic wear and variations throughout. Some decorative metal mounts are missing, consistent with age and use.
