A charming representation of wildlife and maternal protection, this vintage garden sculpture depicts a mother fox seated attentively with her two playful pups nestled at her feet. Crafted in southern France circa 1960, the composition is made of cast stone and features a beautifully aged surface with a natural weathered patina acquired through decades of outdoor exposure.
The mother fox sits upright in a watchful pose, her pointed ears raised and her elongated muzzle turned slightly upward, conveying an alert and protective expression. Her finely textured coat is rendered with incised lines that imitate the animal's fur, while her bushy tail curls gracefully alongside her body. At the base, two young fox cubs are positioned close to their mother, each displaying expressive faces, pointed ears, and carefully modeled features. The three figures rest on an integral naturalistic base decorated with sculpted leaves and foliage, reinforcing the woodland character of the composition.
The sculpture retains its original weathered finish, with soft variations of gray, cream, and earthy tones, along with natural surface deposits and areas of moss-like discoloration that enhance its rustic appeal. The underside reveals the textured cast-stone construction, while the flat base provides stability for outdoor display.
In European folklore, foxes have long symbolized intelligence, resourcefulness, and adaptability. The depiction of a mother surrounded by her young also evokes themes of family, protection, and nurturing, giving this sculptural grouping additional character and meaning.
Weighing approximately 40 pounds, the substantial composition is well suited for display in a garden, on a terrace, along a pathway, or among planted borders. The vintage stone sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a rich, naturally weathered patina that complements its charming subject matter.
