Huge 1960s John Roper Abstract Brutalist Bronze Sculpture, 40 inches
Offered for sale is a 1960s abstract Brutalist sculpture signed by the listed Philadelphia-born sculptor John Roper. Roper is well-known for his mid-to-late 20th-century modernist tabletop works, which, like this sculpture, feature heavily textured, dark patinated bronze forms shaped into sharp, geometric, and cubist shapes. The work is mounted on a simple dark rectangular base. The abstract human figure narrows sharply at the ankle before flaring out into a circular base that is clearly signed and is prominently signed "ROPER" right into the metal base casting.
Its heavy tactile quality and mid-century brutalist style make it an interesting statement piece. It is ideal for display on a fireplace mantel, an executive desk, or styled within an upscale minimalist interior. The sculpture is a very tall example of the artist's work.
