A face emerges from the body of this stoneware jug, built up in heavy relief rather than painted on. The speckled grey glaze pools and catches light across a textured surface, with pierced holes forming a loose stitched pattern down one side and a sunburst radiating from between the eyes.
Applied ears stand out from the body, one eye sits wide and round, the other narrower and more watchful, and the parted mouth shows two sharp white teeth against the dark interior. It’s got the raw, handbuilt presence that Seagrove folk pottery is known for, equal parts whimsical and unsettling.
