The top of the mirror is carved with a highly realistic and full three-dimensional crown. This design was very popular in 18th- and 19th-century European court furniture. The frame is surrounded by flowing scrollwork and blooming flowers. Light and shadow intertwine between the varying depths and reliefs of the carving, creating a dramatic and luxurious effect.
The lively lines and openwork layers on this frame were painstakingly hand-carved by skilled artisans. Its surface exhibits a deep, warm, and layered gold hue. This is achieved by hand-applying extremely thin sheets of real or imitation gold leaf, one by one.
