This antique commode from France has a slightly overhanging rectangular shaped top, atop the case which houses two generously sized drawers framed by clean rectilinear moldings. Each drawer retains elegant brass rosette pulls with a concentric ring decoration and finely cast details, flanking a matching oval escutcheon at center. The case sides are framed with recessed panels. The chest is raised on long, slender tapering legs. The elevated design lends a sense of delicacy while creating visual openness beneath the case. The original painted finish has been stripped to reveal the beautiful, aged wood beneath. Additional custom trim has been thoughtfully applied around the top and drawer fronts, creating subtle definition and enhancing the architectural quality of the piece. The result is a wonderfully layered appearance that blends antique authenticity with decorative versatility. The chest exhibits expected wear including surface scratches, nicks, finish losses, and the top is not perfectly flat, showing minor warping associated with age and natural wood expansion and contraction.
