Beautifully detailed vintage Chinese-style fisherman and boy sculpture, believed to be hand-carved from natural soapstone. This charming decorative figurine depicts an elderly fisherman and his young companion returning with their catch, capturing a traditional fishing scene filled with character, movement, and intricate craftsmanship.

The elderly fisherman wears a broad-brimmed traditional Asian hat and flowing robes, with a long, gracefully curved beard and expressive facial features. He carries a wooden shoulder pole supporting intricately detailed woven baskets filled with freshly caught fish. Accompanying him is a young boy wearing a similar traditional hat and holding a large fish in his arms.

The figures stand together on an organically shaped base featuring textured ground, a small woven basket, and additional sculpted details. The composition is especially appealing for its animated expressions, realistic fish, finely detailed clothing, and dimensional arrangement.

Material and Craftsmanship

The sculpture is believed to be carved from natural soapstone or a closely related soft stone. Its warm ivory, honey-beige, and light tan coloration features subtle variations throughout the surface.

The material has a cool, dense, stone-like feel and a slightly waxy texture, both characteristics commonly associated with soapstone.

Close examination reveals fine parallel tool marks along the underside and other worked surfaces, consistent with traditional stone carving and finishing techniques. The sculpture also displays a soft, natural sheen that enhances its detailed features.

The exact stone composition has not been professionally verified.
