American Sterling and Engraved Glass Muffineer, Attributed to Hawkes, 1900
A finely executed American Victorian sterling-silver and engraved-glass muffineer or sugar shaker, circa 1890–1910, attributed to T. G. Hawkes & Co. The tall, elongated form and combination of deep cutting with naturalistic engraving are characteristic of luxury American Brilliant Period glass.
The vessel has a graceful baluster or double-gourd silhouette. A broad petal-lobed foot rises into a narrow fluted waist before expanding into a full globular shoulder. Deep vertical cutting divides the lower body into architectural panels, creating pronounced refractions while providing a stable base.
The upper body is engraved with sprays of open-petaled flowers, probably asters or field daisies, accompanied by slender leaves, fern-like foliage, and curving stems. Fine wheel engraving defines the petals and botanical details, while deeper cutting forms the vertical flutes and scalloped foot. Polished and matte surfaces produce additional tonal contrast.
The removable sterling-silver top is particularly elaborate. Its architectural form incorporates alternating bands of diamond and circular piercings, scrolling foliate cutwork, elongated vertical slots, and a pierced domed terminal. These openings allowed powdered sugar to be distributed evenly while giving the mount the appearance of a miniature cupola.
The silver mount is stamped “STERLING 10.” The number 10 is most likely a factory size, model, or assembly number rather than a date. Although the quality and decoration are consistent with Hawkes production, the glass is unsigned, and the attribution remains qualified.
Originally used to dispense powdered sugar over muffins, toast, fruit, berries, and desserts, it could also serve cinnamon, cocoa, or another finely ground condiment.
