Commanding in scale and richly detailed, this antique Saint-Hubert hunt buffet makes a striking architectural statement. Crafted in France circa 1870, the substantial oak cabinet is designed in the Black Forest style with a shaped breakfront façade, rounded side cabinets, and an elaborate two-tier mirrored superstructure.
The open upper section incorporates two display shelves supported by carved brackets and framed by scrolling architectural elements enriched with fruit, grape, and foliage motifs. A pierced and molded pediment crowns the buffet, centered by a finely carved stag’s head in high relief and flanked by abundant fruit and grape carvings. The prominent stag crest and hunting imagery are characteristic of the traditional French buffet Saint-Hubert, named for Saint Hubert, patron saint of hunters.
A shaped inset top of richly veined green marble rests above three drawers. The wide central drawer retains a divided, fabric-lined interior suitable for flatware and serving accessories. Four paneled cabinet doors below are decorated with deeply carved hunting and game motifs depicting birds, fish, and other provisions from land and water. The curved side cabinets and central compartment open to reveal interior shelving, providing generous storage for dishes, linens, glassware, or bar accessories.
The warm grain, hand-cut dovetail joinery, sculptural carvings, mirrored back, and architectural proportions give this impressive buffet remarkable character and presence. It is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. The back-left corner of the marble top has an older restoration concealed beneath the mirrored superstructure. Minor wear, and surface variations are consistent with age. A great addition to a hunting lodge or ranch house!
