A striking set of four handmade ceramic leaf bowls by Pat Young, circa the 1950s. Each bowl features deeply textured leaf veining and an undulating rim that curls upward like living foliage. Glossy green glazes range from fresh lettuce and moss to deeper olive tones, pooling in the recessed details and highlighting the sculptural surfaces.
The bowls share a cohesive botanical design while displaying individual variations in shape, texture, and glaze that give handmade pottery its character. Their folded edges create especially beautiful profiles, whether displayed individually or stacked together. Handwritten “PY” marks appear on the undersides.
Their naturalistic forms complement the cabbage ware of Bordallo Pinheiro and Dodie Thayer’s Lettuce Ware, making them a lovely addition to a collected botanical table. Equally at home in a garden-inspired setting, an English country dining room, or the layered interiors associated with Sister Parish, the set pairs beautifully with wicker, floral linens, and traditional porcelain. These references describe stylistic affinities; the bowls are by Pat Young.
A distinctive set of American art pottery offering rich color, tactile detail, and sculptural appeal.
