A substantial late-19th-century English flow-blue transferware platter by Doulton of Burslem in the romantic Watteau pattern.
The central reserve depicts an elegant pastoral gathering beside the water, framed by trees and distant architectural elements. An elaborate cobalt-blue border of scrolling foliage, floral forms and lace-like ornament surrounds the scene. The softly diffused cobalt coloration is characteristic of Victorian flow-blue production.
The reverse bears the blue printed Watteau and Doulton Burslem backstamp with a classical urn emblem. Dating to approximately 1890–1902, this generously scaled platter makes an impressive decorative statement displayed on a wall, plate stand or dining-room hutch.
