An impressive 19th-century hand-colored original steel engraving titled Volunteer, the Great Sire of Trotters, by American artist John Cameron, circa 1880. The handsome portrait depicts the celebrated American trotting stallion Volunteer standing in profile against a pastoral coastal landscape, with a small sailing vessel visible in the distance.
Volunteer was foaled May 1, 1854, in Orange County, New York, and became an important sire to many great trotters over the years. Remarkably, he lived to the extraordinary age of thirty-four.
