Wall shelf features a carved and painted mascaron-like human male face with expressive eyes, swept hair and a mustache. The face form retains traces of the original polychrome decoration, including terracotta, black, and brown tones with areas of natural aged and worn surface that reveal the character and history of the piece. The figure emerges dramatically from beneath the shelf. Its compact size and strong sculptural presence make it an exceptional example of European folk and architectural carving. Mascarons were widely used in the period's European decorative arts as expressive architectural ornaments, often deliberately exaggerated or fanciful in character. The worn polychrome surface gives the carving the appearance of an architectural fragment with a long decorative history. Its small footprint makes it surprisingly versatile.
In modern interiors, this wall shelf can be used to display a small vase, sculpture, candle, or objet d'art. It can be placed flanking a doorway, as a decorative bracket beneath a small mirror or artwork, or added to a gallery wall. This unusual piece of wall decor will complement European Farmhouse, Rustic, Gothic Revival, Transitional, Folk Art, or Eclectic interiors. See less
