Why These Pieces Stand Out
These paintings are more than just figure studies; they are artifacts of a specific moment in the East Bay art scene. Working alongside a master like Terry St. John, these sessions were dedicated to capturing the human form with immediacy and raw emotion.
Painted on-site in Oakland, CA, at the home studio of Terry St. John during an intimate weekly drawing session.
Artist: Original work by James Hartman.
Medium: Acrylic on hardboard
Style: A vibrant, modern interpretation of the Bay Area figurative tradition, balancing classical life drawing with bold, expressive color blocking.
