Each cream-glazed plate is … Read more This is a charming set of twelve vintage French majolica plates by Portieux Vallerysthal, circa 1930s–1950s. Each cream-glazed plate is decorated in high relief with an exuberant assortment of vegetables, including tomatoes, asparagus, artichoke-like forms and stylized garden produce, finished in rich raspberry red, aubergine and turquoise-green glazes.

The wonderfully dimensional molded decoration and slightly irregular hand-finished coloring give the plates the whimsical character associated with traditional French majolica, or barbotine. Particularly attractive displayed in a plate wall or cabinet, they would also make an unusual and colorful table setting.

Marked on the reverse “P.V. Made in France” for Portieux Vallerysthal. The set is in good vintage condition with attractive age-related crazing and minor wear consistent with use, but appears remarkably well preserved as a group. These are in good shape and are 9.25 inches in diameter. See less
