On offer is a painting by noted American wildlife and landscape painter Ted Blaylock of a magnificent bull elk walking along a shallow, rocky stream bed at the foot of an imposing mountain peak.
STYLE: This piece perfectly captures Blaylock's trademark mid-career approach to American wildlife art. Here he utilizes an atmospheric, soft color palette in the sky and background mountains contrasted against high-contrast, heavily detailed texturing on the forest pines, foreground rocks, and the elk's anatomy.
FRAME: The painting is housed in a rustic, weathered barn-wood frame with a dark fabric/velvet inner liner panel. This specific style of framing was incredibly popular for Western and wildlife art during the late 1970s and 1980s.
ARTIST BACKGROUND: Ted Blaylock (1940–2022) was a highly collected, self-taught American wildlife and landscape painter known for his detailed depictions of birds, trains, and the rugged North American wilderness. Born in the foothills of the Ozarks in Missouri, Blaylock grew up working manual labor jobs while teaching himself to paint in his spare time. He committed to art full-time in 1965 and opened his own studio and gallery in Collinsville, Illinois, in 1969 before moving to Arizona in 1972.
ARTIST RENOWN: Blaylock designed the 1990–1991 Arizona Duck Stamp and the 1994 Arizona Lifetime Trout Stamp. His work was also showcased in the prestigious "Arts for the National Parks" and "Birds in Art" exhibitions.
His portfolio primarily focuses on North American wildlife, such as bald eagles, mallards, and bears, as well as nostalgic steam engine trains moving through vast landscapes.
LEGACY: The artist’s original oil paintings are held in prominent private and museum collections, including the Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art, while his imagery continues to be widely reproduced on commercial calendars, puzzles, and greeting cards. Blaylock used his artwork to raise substantial funds for environmental organizations like Ducks Unlimited, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Arizona Nest Watch Program.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Lower right corner (photo #7). Unframed dimensions: 8 inches high x 10 inches wide.
