This vibrant and dense artwork is a mid-century American expressionist painting steeped in industrial narrative, provenance, and historical context. The painting portrays a crowded, kinetic cityscape and industrial yard tracking the progress of transport. On the left, older modes of transit—including what appears to be an early, high-wheeled horse-drawn delivery carriage and an early 20th-century box truck—give way to the right side of the canvas, which features a mid-century GMC red cab truck and modernized structures.
STYLE: The piece strongly aligns with the Mid-Century American Figurative Expressionism movement. It utilizes a "prismatic palette" with intense blues, stark blacks, and fiery oranges/yellows to convey a sense of mechanical clamor, energy, and the constant push-and-pull between human progress and industrialization.
The handwritten inscription on the backing paper serves as the primary historical record for the piece. The date of creation, October 1959, is highly significant as it was a peak creative phase of abstract-figural experimentation in the late 1950s. The painting is housed in a wide, period-correct mid-century modern wood frame with a textured linen liner and a gilded inner lip, which beautifully accents the glowing yellow and orange tones of the pastels.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Unsigned. Unframed dimensions: 12 inches high x 24 inches wide.
