A hand-painted Art Deco stoneware vase by Charles Catteau for Boch Frères Keramis of La Louvière, Belgium, circa 1923 — an early design from the years when Art Deco was still being invented. Bold black lines divide a softly crackled ivory ground into tall panels, and around the shoulder runs a frieze of stylized roses in warm chestnut and ochre with olive-green leaves, each blossom set on its own square of black like a jewel in a bezel. The look is pure Vienna Secession — think Wiener Werkstätte grids and Mackintosh roses — rendered in Belgian stoneware with the fine allover craquelure collectors prize in these wares.

The palette of ivory, black, brown and green is wonderfully easy to place: it reads as graphic and modern on a white shelf, warm and grounded against wood and brass. Try it on a mantel, a console, an entry table or a stack of art books — it holds its own as a single sculptural object, no flowers needed, and pairs as happily with mid-century and modern rooms as with traditional ones. Fully marked on the base with the painted Grès Keramis script, the décor number D.767 and Catteau's signature, with the form number 907 impressed.
