Charles Catteau for Boch Frères Keramis Art Deco Stoneware Vase, Décor D.1005
Circa 1925
A hand-painted Art Deco stoneware vase by Charles Catteau for Boch Frères Keramis of La Louvière, Belgium, circa 1925 — the very year of the Paris exposition that gave Art Deco its name. Arching ivory fronds outlined in warm chocolate brown climb the full height of the vase, each one sheltering a ladder of apple-green blossoms, and the ivory carries a fine crackle glaze that gives the surface the soft, lived-in quality collectors prize in these wares. The palette is held to just three colors — cream, brown and green — which is what makes it so easy to live with: graphic enough to read across a room, quiet enough to sit beside almost anything.
At just over eleven inches, it is a wonderful scale for a mantel, a console, an entry table or a bookshelf, and it holds its own beautifully as a single sculptural object — no flowers required. It is equally at home in a Parisian-style apartment, an organic modern room, or mixed with mid-century pieces, and the green notes pick up handsomely against natural linen, walnut and brass. This is the same family of Catteau grès Keramis vases held by major museums, and the pattern, décor D.1005, is a rare one: the national Catteau Collection in Belgium records only two other examples, both now in the royal museums in Brussels.
Fully marked on the base: Grès Keramis incised, the Ch. Catteau signature painted in black, the décor number D.1005 in red, and the round blue Boch Frères La Louvière stamp.
