Etchings (portfolio i) and 9 leaves with 32 vignettes (portfolio ii) on rolled china paper. 4to. Loose leaves in original half-cloth portfolios with typographic title and graphic border (covers rubbed, edges slightly bumped, portfolio i somewhat stained and spine partly broken). Published in nuremberg, th. Stroefer, in 1880. The illustrated text edition of apuleius's fairy tale "cupid and psyche" was published in 1880. It remained klinger's only illustration of a literary text. In the same year, a large-format, textless edition was also published as a two-part portfolio; the prints were made from the same printing plates, but on larger paper (the book format had a sheet size of only 36 x 26.5 cm). Excellent to magnificently strong impressions on the full sheet. Overall slightly dusty; the leaves of portfolio i are partly slightly wavy and faintly browned at the top, with minimal wear to the edges; the leaves of portfolio ii are occasionally slightly stained, primarily in the white margins, with slight wear to the edges as well; otherwise very very fine. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
