A striking impression after one of Félicien Rops' most provocative Symbolist compositions, Le Calvaire, from the celebrated portfolio Les Sataniques. The composition juxtaposes the crucified Christ with a nude female figure enveloped by a dark, spectral drapery, illuminated by a row of burning candles. The dramatic contrast between sacred iconography and sensual symbolism epitomizes Rops' audacious reinterpretation of Christian themes through the lens of Symbolism and Decadent aesthetics.
