Héliogravure on paper, table from the suite "Les Sataniques". Not signed nor numbered, as issued. A striking impression after one of Félicien Rops' most provocative Symbolist compositions, Le Calvaire, from the celebrated portfolio Les Sataniques. The composition juxtaposes the crucified Christ with a nude female figure enveloped by a dark, spectral drapery, illuminated by a row of burning candles. The dramatic contrast between sacred iconography and sensual symbolism epitomizes Rops' audacious reinterpretation of Christian themes through the lens of Symbolism and Decadent aesthetics. Rendered with rich tonal depth and subtle gradations of black, the heliogravure faithfully conveys the expressive qualities of Rops' original drawing. The composition is built upon a theatrical interplay of light and shadow, where the rigid verticality of the Cross contrasts with the fluid, almost hypnotic movement of the female figure. Rather than presenting a devotional image, Rops transforms the traditional Calvary into an allegory of temptation, sacrifice, desire, and spiritual conflict, themes that recur throughout his mature oeuvre. Part of the renowned Les Sataniques series, Le Calvaire illustrates Rops' fascination with the ambiguous relationship between eroticism, religion, and human psychology. Closely associated with the literary circles of Charles Baudelaire, Joséphin Péladan, and Joris-Karl Huysmans, Rops became one of the defining figures of European Symbolism, producing images that challenged conventional morality while exerting a profound influence on fin-de-siècle art and literature. Le Calvaire stands among the most powerful and controversial images in Rops' Symbolist production. Rather than questioning religious belief itself, the artist explores the tension between spiritual redemption and earthly desire, employing sophisticated allegorical language that reflects the intellectual climate of late nineteenth-century Europe. The work exemplifies Rops' exceptional mastery of graphic composition and his ability to transform traditional iconography into psychologically charged modern imagery. Good overall condition with a well-inked impression and strong tonal contrast. Minor age-related toning and light handling wear to the margins, consistent with age. The image remains clean and visually attractive. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
