This exceptional vintage nautical wall sculpture is a beautifully handcrafted celebration of traditional seamanship and the centuries-old art of maritime knotwork.
Dating from circa the 1970s, the composition features an unusually rich collection of individually formed sailor’s knots, meticulously arranged in a radial pattern around an elaborate central rope knot. Rather than following the conventional appearance of a simple instructional knot board, the piece has been conceived as a highly decorative and almost sculptural composition. The symmetrical arrangement gives the work a strong graphic presence while retaining the authentic character of traditional maritime craftsmanship. Each individual knot has been carefully formed from natural rope and secured by hand to the warm-toned wooden ground. Particularly beautiful are the dark hand-bound whipping details at the rope ends and the small metal fastenings used throughout the composition. These subtle details emphasize the genuine handcrafted character of the piece. The substantial outer border is especially impressive. Several layers of natural rope, including a broad twisted rope and an intricately braided inner border, create a remarkably dimensional frame around the composition. The use of natural fibers, wood and traditional rope-working techniques gives the entire piece an wonderfully organic texture and an authentic nautical appearance. with its combination of traditional craftsmanship and striking decorative geometry, this wall sculpture transcends the character of conventional maritime memorabilia. It can equally be appreciated as an example of vintage folk art, nautical decorative art and sculptural fiber work. A wonderful statement piece for a coastal or waterfront residence, beach house, yacht club, sailing lodge or sophisticated seaside interior.
Its warm natural materials also make it particularly attractive in Organic Modern, Coastal, Mediterranean, Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian and contemporary interiors, where it can provide an interesting textural contrast to clean architectural surroundings. It would look especially striking above a console, sideboard or fireplace, in an entrance hall, library, study or living room, as well as in a curated gallery wall. Its relatively compact proportions also allow it to be displayed beautifully as a standalone piece.
Diameter: 38 cm / 14.96 in. Depth: 4 cm / 1.57 in. Weight: approximately 1.4 kg / 3.09 lbs. A distinctive vintage object combining authentic maritime tradition, natural materials and highly decorative craftsmanship.
