This extraordinary four-tier chandelier represents the larger and considerably more elaborate version of the sculptural ecclesiastical lighting associated with the schönwandt workshop. Its attribution is based on the highly distinctive construction, choice of materials, exceptional metalworking quality and close correspondence with documented brass lighting produced by the workshop. Gotthold schönwandt’s workshop was particularly associated with sophisticated handcrafted metalwork for german churches during the postwar period. Surviving documentation confirms the workshop’s involvement in the production of church lighting, while archival collections preserve photographs and drawings of lighting fixtures manufactured in nordeck.

the chandelier is an exceptional piece of architectural metalwork. Four geometric tiers are arranged around a strong square central stem. From substantial polygonal brass hubs extend precisely positioned tubular arms terminating in long cylindrical brass socket covers. The repetition of square, polygonal and cylindrical forms produces an almost architectural composition: monumental in appearance yet remarkably restrained in ornament. Despite its impressive 24 individual light sources, the chandelier measures only approximately 52 cm / 20.5 in. In diameter and 71 cm / 28 in. In height. This unusually concentrated construction gives the fixture tremendous visual presence without the excessive diameter normally associated with chandeliers carrying this number of lights. Particularly beautiful is the naturally developed surface of the metal. The brass displays a deep brown-to-bronze patina with subtle golden undertones. This original aged surface emphasizes the sculptural quality of the construction and has deliberately not been polished to a bright finish.

the open arrangement of the 24 e26/e27 sockets provides remarkable freedom in determining the final appearance of the chandelier. Simple clear glass bulbs emphasize its architectural mid-century character, while opaline globes, sophisticated led bulbs, decorative glass or heavier crystal-style bulbs can transform it into an entirely different sculptural installation. The light sources themselves therefore become part of the design. The chandelier weighs approximately 9 kg / 19.8 lb. Its substantial construction and internal suspension system were conceived for considerably greater loads than the fixture itself, an important feature when heavier decorative light sources are used. It will be supplied with approximately two meters / 6.6 ft. Of suspension cable. A greater cable length can be provided upon request, allowing the chandelier to be installed dramatically in high entrance halls, staircases, galleries, hotel interiors, lofts or double-height architectural spaces. Several examples of this large four-tier version are available, creating the rare possibility of using matching chandeliers in a substantial architectural project. Installed individually, the chandelier functions almost as a piece of suspended sculpture; installed as a group, the repeated geometric architecture can create an exceptional lighting installation for a hotel, restaurant, gallery, staircase or large private residence. The design is especially compelling because it bridges german mid-century modernism, ecclesiastical design and early brutalist tendencies. There is virtually no applied decoration: the construction itself becomes the ornament. A rare and exceptionally sculptural example of german postwar ecclesiastical lighting, combining extraordinary craftsmanship, architectural geometry and the remarkable visual impact of 24 individually illuminated light sources.
