Original 1856 U.S. Coast Survey nautical chart of Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay, published under the supervision of A. D. Bache. The highly detailed map extends from the Susquehanna River south to the northern Outer Banks of North Carolina, and from Richmond and Petersburg east to the Atlantic Ocean.
Cities, towns, rivers, bays, and inlets are identified throughout, including Hampton Roads and the James, York, and Rappahannock Rivers. Extensive triangulation lines document the remarkable surveying work undertaken throughout the Chesapeake Bay region.
Alexander Dallas Bache (1806–1867) served as Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey from 1843 to 1865 and was one of the most important figures in the development of American coastal mapping. Established in 1807 under President Thomas Jefferson, the Coast Survey was created to produce accurate charts of the young nation’s coasts and harbors.
Condition: Very good antique condition, fold lines visible. Framed to conservation standards in a solid driftwood frame and UV-resistant glass.
