Measuring an impressive 48" x 48", the board has wonderful presence as both a piece of American folk art and a graphic decorative object.

The tightly composed diamond-patterned field is rendered in green, red, black, and grey, creating a bold geometric composition with an unexpectedly modernist quality. Its strong symmetry, scale, and graphic use of color make it particularly striking displayed as wall art.

Provenance: The Bruce and Doranna Wendel Collection of Gameboards

Bruce and Doranna Wendel began collecting historic American gameboards in the late 1970s, becoming early champions of these overlooked examples of American folk art and design. With an aesthetic sensibility informed by modernism, they recognized the remarkable abstraction, geometry, pattern, and color found in historic gameboards.

Over the next five decades, the Wendels assembled one of the most significant collections of its kind, comprising more than 200 examples. Their collection and scholarship were celebrated by the American Folk Art Museum, most recently in the museum's 2024 exhibition, Playing with Design: Gameboards, Art, and Culture. Bruce Wendel also served on the Museum's Board of Trustees, and the couple donated numerous important gameboards to its permanent collection.
