At the … Read more A large octagonal metal tray featuring an elaborate decoupage of Jack Russell terriers, tartan plaid and floral motifs. At the center, four terriers are arranged around a tartan square, while four Jack Russell portraits anchor the corners. Green, red, and golden floral rosettes punctuate the deep brown ground.
The tray’s imagery is created from individually cut and layered elements, arranged to form the remarkably detailed composition. The richly layered surface was purposely antiqued, with mottling, tiny bubbles and variations in the finish giving the tray the character of an older piece.
Created by Holly Lueders in 1997 exclusively for Frank McIntosh of Henri Bendel, New York. McIntosh was the tastemaker behind Henri Bendel's home and tabletop offerings, known for his selection of distinctive decorative objects. Founded in New York in 1895, Henri Bendel became one of the city's most influential luxury retailers, celebrated for its fashion, accessories and distinctive home furnishings.
On the reverse, a notation reads: “Exclusively Made for Frank McIntosh of Henri Bendel / Holly Lueders / 1997©”.
With its combination of Jack Russell terriers, tartan plaid and florals, the tray has a strong English country-house sensibility. At nearly 29 inches long, it has substantial presence and can be used as a serving tray or ottoman tray or displayed as a decorative object.
