Dating approximately 1880, this unusual chair combines the traditional roundabout or corner-chair form with the more expressive carving associated with the Victorian Gothic and Renaissance Revival periods.

The broad curved top rail terminates in pronounced scrolls and centers an especially well-carved foliate mask surrounded by scrolling leaves. Three contrasting back supports—including two pierced geometric splats and a turned central support—give the chair an appealing sculptural quality from every angle. Cabriole front supports ending in carved paw feet complete the design.

Its sculptural form works especially well in English Traditional, Gothic Revival, Victorian and collected eclectic interiors, where it can serve as a distinctive occasional or accent chair.

Corner chairs are wonderfully versatile because they don't demand the conventional placement of an armchair. I especially like one angled beside a fireplace, tucked into a library or bedroom corner, or used as a distinctive occasional chair where its unusual silhouette can be appreciated from several directions.
