Striking Japanese Mashiko ware pedestal bowl by certified traditional craftsperson Takaichi Tokoi (床井崇一) of Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. This substantial wheel-thrown bowl features a wide, shallow form raised on a flared pedestal base. Expressive hand-painted decoration in iron brown, black, rust and touches of blue creates an organic botanical motif against the warm cream ground. The broad rim is finished with beautifully varied earth-tone glazes in shades of brown, ochre and olive, while the pedestal base features a dramatic mottled black and brown glaze.
Tokoi is a recognized traditional craftsperson of Mashiko ware, one of Japan's most celebrated regional pottery traditions. Originating in Tochigi Prefecture in the 19th century, Mashiko pottery is known for its rustic character, substantial clay bodies and expressive glazes. The bowl retains its original documentation identifying Takaichi Tokoi as the maker and providing details of his career, along with an identification card describing the piece as a Mashiko ware large bowl.
