Dating from the late 19th- to the early 20th-century, this was custom-made and expertly styled to mimic a classic 18th-century European sedan chair. Such an enclosed wheelless vehicle was used to carry a single passenger through bustling city streets. This piece displays the opulent hand-painted flowers and ribbons, gilt trim and silk, top-to-bottom silk damask upholstery that was customary among the aristocracy.

EXTERIOR: True to the silhouette of a sedan chair, the sides have a gentle, splayed S-curve that widens at the window area. The door features a distinctive wavy, arched top edge to follow the curved roof line. The vibrant red finish and painted details are executed in the classic French Vernis Martin style. This special varnishing technique was invented in 18th-century France by the Martin brothers to replicate highly sought-after East Asian lacquer. It quickly became a hallmark of luxury European furniture.
The lower front door panel features the hand-painted Cupid, or cherub figure, gracefully intertwined with a floral garland. This romantic, whimsical motif is highly characteristic of Louis XV revival and Rococo fantasy aesthetics.
The side panels are decorated with detailed musical themes, depicting a lute/mandolin and a tambourine accented by bows and ribbons. Historically, musical symbols on decorative furniture symbolized leisure, harmony, and high-class refinement.
The sides are outfitted with brass side fittings designed to resemble the bracket handles where long carrying poles would be inserted to lift a real sedan chair.

INTERIOR: The inside of the cabinet and the rear panel of the single door are completely upholstered in a golden, patterned damask or brocade fabric decorated with a dense leaf and vine motif. The piece features three delicate, removable glass display shelves with custom scalloped borders, allowing light to pass freely down the height of the piece.

While full-sized sedan chairs were sometimes converted into corner cabinets during the Victorian era, this piece is an intentional, small-scale curio cabinet measuring precisely 20 inches tall. It was created specifically to showcase pocket watches, jewelry, snuff boxes, or other small luxury collectibles on a sideboard or vanity dresser.
