For your consideration, a Kashkul (also known as a Sufi dervish begging bowl or alms bowl). Originating from traditional workshops in the Kashmir region of northern India, this particular style dates from the late British Raj period to the mid-20th century.
It features a distinct boat or crescent profile with stylized handles at both ends. This ship-shaped form symbolically represents a spiritual vessel carrying offerings or navigating a mystical journey.
The exterior shell is crafted from lacquered papier-mâché, which provides a lightweight base for highly detailed surface decoration. The interior is lined with a solid brass or copper insert to give the vessel structure and protect the inner bowl.
The outer surface is hand-painted with dense, intricate Indo-Persian floral and vegetal motifs highlighted by a crackled green glaze and delicate gilded scrollwork
