Striking vintage Ethiopian narrative painting composed of twelve individually illustrated scenes, each accompanied by Ethiopian script. The colorful composition depicts figures, animals, ceremonial gatherings, travel and courtly scenes in the distinctive flattened, graphic style associated with traditional Ethiopian painting.
The imagery appears related to the celebrated Ethiopian narrative of Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, and King Solomon, a story central to Ethiopian cultural tradition and the Kebra Nagast. A documented mid-20th-century Ethiopian example depicting the same narrative uses numerous small framed scenes with accompanying Amharic inscriptions.
