The colour is what sets it apart. Alongside the expected indigo, madder and ivory the weaver has used a strong magenta-violet, threaded through the birds, the leaves and the small rosettes across the field — an unusual colour in this weaving and one that lifts the whole rug out of the ordinary.

There is no central medallion. Great red palmettes sit at intervals across the field, each with a soft grey-green centre, and between them curving leaves and blossoming stems carry the birds through the design — some perched, some in flight, no two drawn quite alike. Small paired marks scattered in magenta across the ground are the weaver's own, worked in as she went.

A wide ivory border of red flowering vine frames the field, set between fine reciprocal guard stripes in indigo and madder, and both ends finish in a striped flatweave band above the original fringe.

Condition: hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no visible wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and end finishes are intact and the fringe is original and complete.

Measuring 47 by 72 inches, this is a true 4 by 6 — the most useful small size there is. It suits a bedroom at the foot of a bed, a study, an entry, a nursery, or a seating area within a larger room, and it layers well over jute or sisal. The indigo ground anchors it while the magenta keeps it from being sober, and it works in eclectic, bohemian, maximalist and traditional interiors. See less
