Above each urn rises a stepped, serrated form drawn like a tree, so the design reads as three plantings set out along the field.

The wool has a good lustre and the drawing is fine for a tribal piece — the urns are outlined in ivory and filled with bands of olive, orange, madder and aubergine, each one slightly different from its neighbours. Between them the indigo ground is scattered with small flowering sprigs, hooked forms, birds and stars, and a slender vine runs the length of each side.

The framing is unusually generous. A broad camel border carries a running vine of small green leaves and flowers; inside it, a dark aubergine band is planted with rows of small blossoms and candle forms in madder, ivory, olive and orange. Fine reciprocal guard stripes separate the bands, and both ends finish in a striped flatweave in orange, ivory and indigo above the original fringe.

Condition: hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no visible wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and end finishes are intact and the fringe is original and complete.

Measuring 39 by 78 inches, it suits an entry, a hallway, a kitchen, a study, or the side of a bed, and layers well over a larger natural-fibre rug. The indigo ground with its camel border is easy to place and works in bohemian, traditional, eclectic and warm modern interiors. See less
