The garden panel is one of the great ideas in carpet design. The field is laid out as a walled garden divided into beds — the chahar bagh, the four-garden plan of Persian and Central Asian gardens — and each bed is given its own planting. Here every one of the thirty panels is a complete miniature rug with its own border and its own design: cypresses in one, a flowering vase in another, a medallion, a tree of life, a spray of blossom. No two are alike, and no two share a palette.

Around the grid the grey ground opens out, planted with tall stylised flowers and slender gold columns along all four edges — the garden's outer walk. The grey itself carries a strong horizontal abrash, the natural banding of hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches, and it gives what could be a busy rug a calm, unifying field to sit on. Both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.

Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.

Measuring 65 by 94 inches, it suits a dining table for four, a bedroom under a queen bed, a study, or a seating area within a larger room. The grey ground keeps the colour in check, so the rug reads as one considered piece rather than thirty competing ones, and it works in transitional, eclectic, traditional and contemporary interiors.
