A hand-knotted runner in the Mamluk design, woven in Afghanistan on a soft teal ground with olive-gold medallions, crimson and ivory. Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.
The Mamluk carpets of Cairo are among the most disciplined designs in the whole tradition — built entirely from geometry, with none of the curving vine work of the Persian schools. Seven octagonal star medallions run the length of this runner, each one drawn as a series of concentric frames around a small central rosette, alternating in scale so the eye moves steadily down the hallway rather than stopping at a centre point.
Between the medallions the ground is filled with the design's characteristic small forms: eight-pointed stars, papyrus umbrellas, rosettes and slender candlestick motifs in crimson, ivory and gold on the teal. A narrow ivory main border of stylised blossoms frames the field, and both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.
Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.
Measuring 32 by 140 inches, this is a true hallway runner — long enough for a full corridor, an entry hall, a galley kitchen or a landing, and narrow enough to leave floor showing on both sides as a runner should. The soft teal and gold are quiet colours that will not fight the rooms opening off the hall, and it suits transitional, traditional, coastal and contemporary interiors.
