A hand-knotted Tree of Life rug, woven in Afghanistan on a deep indigo ground and filled from edge to edge with a garden of paradise: flowering trees, peacocks, pheasants, cranes, songbirds, foxes and small animals in rust, sky blue, ivory, orange and sage. Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.
The dark ground is what makes it. Against indigo the pale blues and ivories read almost luminous, and the rust and orange birds come forward as though lit. The wool has a soft lustre and a dense, even pile, and the indigo carries the gentle horizontal movement of hand-spun yarn rather than the flatness of machine colour.
There is no border. The garden simply runs off all four edges, so the rug reads as a window into a wood rather than a framed picture. Every tree in the field is drawn differently — some in blossom, some in leaf, some bare — and each has its own birds settled in the branches or standing beneath. Between them the ground is scattered with flowers, leaves and creatures, so the rug rewards close looking while still reading as one deep blue field from standing height. Both ends finish in the original hand-tied fringe.
Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.
Measuring 72 by 108 inches, this is a standard 6 by 9 — the most useful rug size there is. It will hold a living room seating group with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, a dining table for six, or a bedroom under a queen bed. The indigo ground anchors a room and works in traditional, transitional, eclectic and contemporary interiors, particularly against wood floors, cream walls and leather.
