American folk art oil painting depicting an African American man and young white boy traveling by horse-drawn wagon, signed “A. Sims” and dated 5/2000. A pair of black draft horses in detailed harness dominates the foreground, while the figures ride together along a country road beneath an expansive blue sky.
The painting has a strong narrative quality, with the contrast between the two figures adding an intriguing element to the otherwise pastoral rural scene. Presented in a substantial carved-look wood frame with warm brown and gilt-toned detailing.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
There is something wonderfully thought-provoking about this painting. The artist has given us two very different figures traveling together but hasn't told us their story. I particularly like the beautifully painted draft horses; they give the composition both strength and character.
